In the world of wine, "terroir" is a French term that refers to an elusive concept that deals with the influence that a vineyard has on the wines that it bears. A thousand French winegrowers would give you a thousand different explanations. What is clear is that the most noteworthy vineyards impart distinct or provocative characteristics into their wines. While climate, geography and farming styles are all important, the general consensus is that the crucial defining factor boils down to one concept, soil. Describing a wine's terroir is like a description of its pedigree, not from the standpoint of grape varieties, but from the effect that the soil has on the grapes, and ultimately, the wines.
