These wines are from grapes grown in a specific vineyard location that has unique qualities adding to the wine's flavor and texture. Not only does the character of the wine showcase the soil, climate, and geography of a particular vineyard, it narrows it further to a specific location within the site. The winemaker selects those distinctive vineyards and makes sure the wine achieves the ultimate expression of that terroir. Wines currently selected for the Terroir Extraordinaire Program are listed below. As opportunities present themselves, wines may be added or deleted from the program. Each are limited in production and sell out fast!
Pinot Noir, Ocean's Ghost
Babcock Estate Grown, Santa Rita Hills SOLD OUT
2009 Ocean's Ghost came and went quickly.
This photo is of the Ocean's Ghost section of the Babcock Estate, otherwise known as blocks 14 and 15, with the Santa Rita Hills in the background. Thousands of years ago, this was the bottom of the Pacific Ocean creating diatomacheous soils. It results in a deep, rich Pinot with layers of berry, spice and earth flavors.
Pinot Noir, Déjà Vu
Rabbit Ridge Vineyard , Paso Robles (Yes, Paso Robles!) SOLD OUT
2009 Pinot Noir Deja Vu was released in March 2011 and was sold out in a few months.
The west side of Paso Robles is layered with limestone and much cooler than the rest of Paso Robles. This feature is what attracted Bryan Babcock to the terroir at Rabbit Ridge Vineyards. This is an elegant wine with great aromatics.
Pinot Noir, Microcosm
La Vina Ranch, Sta. Rita Hills
The Microcosm section sits on top of a beautiful 15 acre bench right in the middle of La Vina Ranch. The wine is deep in color with complex flavors, a rich body, along with a sinewy, brooding character.
Pinot Noir, Precocious
El Camino Vineyard, Los Alamos
The newly planted vineyard is situated on limestone on top of a hill. The wine is elegant, sweet and supple. It has the classic dried rose petal character, spicy cranberry/cherry fruit and just a touch of bacon. Its delicacy and mysteriousness is its power.
Chardonnay, Top Cream
Babcock Estate Grown, Santa Rita Hills
Creamy, layered, refined, weightless elegance with flavors of pear, apple, lemon curd and butter. Although this is the cream of the crop, the name is for the top soil on the "bench" at the Babcock Estate which is a grayish brown, gravelly loam on top of an ominously impervious layer of white sandstone that offers life to its vines.
Cabernet Sauvignon, The Loin
Estelle Vineyard, Santa Ynez Valley SOLD OUT
The soil at Estelle Vineyard is a fairly rich looking loam full of cobble stones of all sizes and colors. The Loin section has reddish hue and is a choice cut of the vineyard. All of the Estelle Vineyard is tantalizing, but this is the filet mignon. A dark, rich red showing cassis-blackberry flavors with a dash of dried herbs and spice.
Cabernet Sauvignon, Nucleus
Estelle Vineyard, Santa Ynez Valley SOLD OUT
2007 "NUCLEUS" Cabernet Sauvignon is nearly sold out, and the 2008 is now available.
Nucleus represents more the middle, or nucleus, of the Estelle Vineyard, located in the warm, eastern Happy Valley appellation of the Santa Ynez Valley. It is well extracted, deep in the color with double layered boysenberry flavors and an ultra thin layer of dark chocolate between the two layers.
Syrah, Upper Crust
Rancho Sisquoc, Santa Maria Valley SOLD OUT
2009 "UPPER CRUST" Syrah is available now.
Rancho Sisquoc is the most easterly vineyard in the Santa Maria Valley, making it also the warmest in this very cool appellation. This ultra rich Syrah has the sweet boysenberry pie fruit of warm climate Syrah along with the depth and complexity of cool climate Syrahs.
